Javier Bardem Says Gaza Stance Boosted Career

(MENAFN) Spanish actor Javier Bardem has said that his public support for Gaza has not damaged his career, but instead has coincided with an increase in professional opportunities, including offers from the United States.

Speaking on Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival, Bardem said: “I’ve had a whole host of offers,” adding that this has shifted his perception of industry attitudes. He suggested that changing perspectives, particularly among younger generations, were reshaping how the conflict is viewed, describing the situation in stark moral terms.

Last week, jury member Paul Laverty criticized what he called informal blacklisting within Hollywood, alleging that actors such as Bardem, Susan Sarandon, and Mark Ruffalo had faced professional consequences due to their public positions on Gaza.

Bardem said he had heard of such blacklisting rumors but had seen no direct evidence of them. He added that those allegedly involved in compiling such lists would eventually face public scrutiny and consequences.

The actor called on more film industry figures to speak out about Gaza, arguing that silence on the issue amounted to moral failure.

“Those who have that ability and do not do so seem cowardly to me,” he said. “With your silence, or your support, you are pro-genocide.”

He further argued that the crisis in Gaza reflects wider global failures, pointing to what he described as political, institutional, and economic hypocrisy in international responses to major conflicts.

Bardem also criticized several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, linking his remarks to themes explored in his Cannes film The Beloved, particularly what he described as “toxic masculinity.”
